XX Century painters and the playing cards. Paola Masino’s collection
Playing cards with XX Century painters such as: Carla Accardi, Burri, Consagra, Primo Conti, Carrà, Campigli Capogrossi, Cagli, Fautrier, Cocteau, Carlo Levi, Guttuso, Prampolini, Fausto Pirandello – just to mention some. This fascinating match will be ideally possible thanks to the original playing card collection of Paola Masino (1908-1989), that Alvise Memmo donated to Museo di Roma.
Writer, maverick, high culture intellectual, Massimo Bontempelli’s partner, Paola Masino met and attended Italian and foreigner scholars, musicians and painters in her various residences in Rome, Florence, Paris, Milan, Venice and, in summer, in Castiglioncello and Forte dei Marmi. She loved playing cards i.e. Poker, Pinochle (with Bontempelli), “scopone” (with Pirandello) and to collect decks of cards. Because of her “passions” she had the idea to ask her artist friends to create Neapolitan and French painted cards as well as Tarots. Starting from 1947 until the ‘80s, she created in this way, a unique collection in the world which testifies the XX Century painting art and converts playing cards, out of their context, into a work of art and a “metaphysic symbol”.
