On display at the Museum of Rome - Palazzo Braschi 35 nineteenth-century photographs by Stefano Lecchi (1804 – 1859/63), compared with 15 modern prints illustrating the siege of the Roman Republic.

Stefano Lecchi’s photographs are the first example of proto-war reportage yet known. Probably made in July 1849 using either salted paper or copper plate printing, the reportage illustrates in forty images the ruinous effects of the siege of Rome. Found by Marina Miraglia at the Modern and Contemporary History of Rome, where it is stored, these photographs are a precious and powerful testimony of the most significant events related to the defence of the Roman Republic.
